: Steve,
: I like your use of veneers. Did you inlay or "onlay" them?
: thanks,
: Mark
There are a variety of techniques. The arrow on the deck is made of full thickness pieces. The curly maple on the tip and tail is bordered by 1/4 inch thick walnut and were almost 1/2 inch thick. They were then shaped to match the curvature of the deck after the stripping was done. The shaft of the arrow is 1/2 inch wide strips that were installed during stripping.
The diamond features on the cockpit recess were made in a similar way. The spalted maple is quite fragile so the shaping was done by sanding only.
The pattern on the hull was made from 1/8 x 1/4 strips that were set into slots cut through the hull. This was done by cutting one slot at a time and filling it.
Walnut burl veneers were used on the hatch lips. They cover the magnets in the lip. In this case, they were built up on the lip structure.
The coaming is Joe Greenley's layered construction and several of the borders trim details are thin - some as thin as 1/32. Whenever thin stock was needed, I resawed stock and thinned it using my disc sander.
