: I am building a greenland kayak using Robert Morris' book. I've installed the
: stem and stern and the keel. But I am not sure if the keel is too deep.
: The instructions say to measure one fistmiel from the top of the gunwales
: at the masik. is this measurement from the top of the gunwales when the
: boat is upside down (this would be the morticed surface of the gunwales)
: or is this from the actual top of the gunwales? I used the morticed side
: of the gunwales,I measured the depth of the boat at the end of keel
: stringer from bottom of the keel to the top of the gunwales (when right
: side up) and it is in the 12" range at the bow end. Does this sound
: right? If I were to base the keel on one fistmeil from the actual top of
: the gunnels this would reduce the depth of the boat by 1 1/2 to 2"
: and the measurement of the depth at the end of the keel stringer would be
: in the 8-9" range at the bow end. I'm a bit confused and hope to get
: this right before I continue building. Any comments would be a huge help.
: Thanks
: hope this isn't too confusing.

Hi Peter,
The depth is measured from the actual top (sheerline) of the gunwales to the top (the face that touches the ribs) of the keel stringer.
Hope this helps,
