: Angling the aft bulkhead is merely to reduce water volume in the cockpit by
: more or less following the curve of your rump. I have also seen vertical
: curved bulkheads that rap around the hips to reduce cockpit volume. I do
: not see the effort is worth the quart of water that is excluded from the
: cockpit. More importantly, locating the bulkhead right at the rear of the
: cockpit cutout makes dumping out water quick and complete.
I agree and think I wrote that above. I'll have to check.
: The front bulkhead is tilted when used as a footrest in an effort to make
: your ankles more comfortable. Locating the front bulkhead close to your
: feet will reduce a worthwhile volume since most designs and kit design for
: very long legs.
Yep, I agree, but, apparently, Valley says that they tilt their front bulkhead to prevent damage to the hull when it takes a hard hit. Still, if I was using a bulkhead as a footrest, which I have in one kayak, I'd mount it vert. to reduce volume and use foam to account for the tilt, which would also reduce volume. Even when I used a bulkhead as a footrest, it was vert. and never bothered me. I subscribe to having the ankles a 90 degree angles while in the kayak and the tilt just wouldn't work for me and my style of sitting in the kayak and the style that I teach.
