If you've got redwood, use it. My Whiptail is all redwood (3/16" strips) and weighs in at 45lb, even with the heavy rubber hatches. I miss the smell of planed cedar when working with redwood, though. And the splinters from redwood are killer, but it still makes a great kayak.
