Thanks Bill, that helps a lot - the weight gain from epoxy was what I was worried about. I'll be varnishing my cross braces anyway, so can do the stringers too. I have to visit west marine - do you have any brand suggestions for a good varnish? I want to clear coat some steel angle brackets with it also (although I could just paint them, I suppose). Carl
