Hi Bryan,
I've had the same 12v gel battery for four years now and they hold a charge for a year easily and they can empty my cockpit I don't know how many times. I've tried up to 5, got tired of it and stopped, and it was still pumping well. I've never had to bail out my cockpit 5 times in a trip yet. So 'batteries die' is true, but they take a long time to die. In the meantime a good electric pump assembly is the best safety option out there, better/safer than a foot or hand pump by a nautical mile for the simple fact that you can put all your energy into staying upright.
