Arthur-- As you increase the thickness of the wood, at some point your theory is correct. I suspect though, that building with wood alone will lead to a heavy boat. One of the inherent weaknesses of a strip built boat is that all the wood grain runs in the same direction. This is why traditional wooden canoes have ribs and why 'glass sheathing on strip build boats works well. Both provide strength in an axis perpendicular to the wood grain.
