Several years ago (4 to 6), someone posted a good write-up about using hardwoods in strip built construction. I think the name was Mike Loriz, but I could be wrong. I have a copy of what he wrote at work. He considered the increased strength of the hardwoods and concluded he could build with 1/8 inch strips. His analysis was quite thorough. I don't know much about the wood you are using, but it seems like thinner strips and maybe even lighter weight glass could be a way to go.
It seems like thinner strips may mean you may need to also use narrower strips. Fairing with narrower strips will keep you from losing too much material with thin strips.
