Ah yes, that does have a familiar ring to it. Actually, I sand after every coat of anything I apply to see where I am while applying following coats if for no other reason. But regarding fiberglassing...
I wet out and let cure for 24, then hand sand with 60- or 80-grit to remove snags, small bumps, gnats, etc., and make applying the first fill coat easier. The action also causes inch-by-inch inspection of results, reduces excess epoxy application, and plainly shows where I've been. Use squeegees exclusively, allow all app's 24 to cure, use ROS on all but initial wet-out app's. Rinse and repeat 'til pits vamoose.
As a side note I never clean up a surface prior to next coats. The sanding dust becomes transparent and acts as a base coat that's very similar to the "sanding sealer" we use prior to final laquer finishes in cabinet shops. I'll blow off excess dust if it piles up, but almost never wipe a surface down.
While I'm satisfied with my fiberglassing results, it should be noted that I suck at varnish work by anyone's standards. We're talking about epoxy work only here. One last thing: Tony Olsen also calls 'em "skim boats" while the rest of the world, as far as I am aware, sez "fill coats". You guys must hang out in the same seedy old kayak builder's bars.
