I built my first ever kayak in 1976, as a modified skin on frame. Built with a redwood frame, it had a canvas hull, and a birch deck. The birch was 1/8" ply from a door shop. It looked great and worked pretty well for a long time. The frame has since been retired to a local kayak museum.
