If I have understood correctly, you're saying that your proposal would not affect the side to side bonding of the strips, but would add a bit of longitudinal strength. OK, but I figure it would be quite small compared to the contribution of the glass cloth on each side, and I'm way too lazy to take things that far.
An interesting idea though, and fun to explore.
