: If you want light and strong consider using multiple layers of 3.2 ounce

: epoxy/glass ratio and multiple layers end up being stronger. Just a
: thought.
My Shooting Star has two layers of 3.2 satin weave outside and one layer inside, and weighs 34# rigged. You definitely use less resin--and take on more work. The glass shows a little more, but you have to look hard (see photo). And the resulting laminate is more resistant to paddle dings and such than, say, a 4 oz. single layer and is supposed to be stronger than 6 oz. plain weave. (Btw, I always think of this as the Voldemort layup, since it was first promoted on this board by an unstable fellow whose name is never mentioned these days, and who Nick had to ban from the board for his manifold abuses--the only time this has happened, I think.) It's a good layup if you have the patience, but it's hard to beat a regular 6 oz. plain-weave layup for simplicity and easy working, and you can get a light boat with it if you're careful.
