The truncated portion of the stern on baidarkas is generally only above the waterline. Most Aleut-built examples have a nice, clean shape at the waterline and below, or at least a less severe transition. If you were to carry the truncated stern shape all the way down to the keel, you'll likely see a great deal of drag from the turbulence caused by the abrupt change in hull shape. The characteristic baidarka hull form tend to have more rounded bilges since they are multi-chine, giving a bit of an advantage over single-chine hulls. Modern variants have even more rounded/optimized hull shapes and gain their speed advantage from this, not the bow and stern shape.

Baidarkas are rarely shorter than typical Greenland kayaks or modern sea kayaks; they do tend to have a longer waterline as they do not have much overhang at the bow and none at the stern.
