Bill, it really was a good steer. Just to get the links into the record on this board:

I hadn't realized until just now that instead of carving up a 2x4, the Italian job is laminated from a 1-by and a 2x2 (or whatever). Clever: now I can get TWO paddles out of that beautiful, clear cedar 2x4 I've been hoarding.
