Hi Dan,

Mostly it depends on what you're time is worth to you. You can buy clear stock and spend alot less time with the milling and building with long strips or you can buy cedar decking and spend alot more time sorting and working around knots as well as planking with much shorter pieces. The former is much more expensive and alot faster. Also clear stock is cheaper the narrower the boards are, ie: 1x4's are much less pricy than 1x12's. Also you end up with somewhat more waste with narrow boards as there's always a strip at the end of the cutting that's either too narrow to use or too dangerous to try to rip.

So, lots of variables.
