: I am thinking of doing the repair on the inside - the outside gel coat is
: intact so no need to deface that -;)

: Given that, does it matter where the kevlar is and if it is on top (e.g. on
: the inside of the hull, in this case)? Wouldn't any potential fuzzing be
: covered with the new cloth and epoxy?

: I'll see if I can figure out if there is another layer on the inside or if it
: is kevlar all the way if CD is kind enough to answer. But the hull is
: paper thin in this area... The boat is the CD Extreme (aka Nomad) by the
: way if it helps.

: I do not have any damaged material sticking up to remove - there are no
: visible cracks or irregularities on the finish, just the area is somewhat
: softer and on one side of the deck is barely flattened (1mm or so in from
: the intended more convex shape as seen from outside) as if something is
: pushing from outside. So wouldn't sanding be very light and would it cause
: much fuzzing?

Well, what color is the boat? With CD's boats usually the kevlar is on the inside and it's a golden color (kinda yellow), most glass boats insides are white.

Btw, the Extreme is a really cool boat, just paddled the new version (Nomad) a couple weeks ago. Wish my local dealer would get one so I could take the lines off it, would make a nice stripper :)

I'd use a solvent to remove any wax etc. from the inside first, then carefully abrade that surface and lay up the patch on the inside. The back patch I'd imagine would be a royal PITA as it's likely behind the bulkhead so you'll be working thru a hatch for access. Trust me, you don't want to sand into the kevlar, makes a mess you don't want. Luckily these boats are laminated with polyester resin so the solvent will soften it so the epoxy will stick. I wouldn't add alot of thickness to the patch as it would create a hard spot that the rest of the hull will flex around which can cause more problems.

I'd also figure out a way to carry the boat that gets the cradles further apart, you don't want to have to do this again. Look at Tom Yost's site and see his rack extender ideas.
