Well there's a couple fast ways and a couple good ways, normal huh? You can bolt together a bunch of 2x4's to make an external strongback, but it tends to warp over time. Construction lumber isn't real stable. You can make a sectional plywood box beam that is stable. The one's I've seen have a smaller piece that slides into the larger pieces so you can extend the length to whatever is required.
