I have never built from a kit. I imagine the main benefit is that one does not have to source materials. This goes double for first timers and for people living in remote places.
If you can get the materials though it is not that much hastle to build from plans.
Some companies have suppliers elsewhere. CLCboats for instance has a UK supplier (http://www.fyneboatkits.com) that sells under licence. I presume that the components are all made in the UK. Hence no foreign shipping costs or duty.
