I have certainly used pine on the 4 Yost boats I have built. The first 3 were full length pieces of white or Monterey pine, the last was made from baltic pine that had been fingerjointed (commercially) from 2 ft lengths. It was dirt cheap at the local building supply recyclers. Never had an issue with breakages in any of these and the additional weight compared to WRC would be minimal.
