Learn to fall - tuck and roll. It should be instinctive. The worst crash of many I had was after hitting a car door. Fortunately there was enough room to land in between it and the car parked in front of the one I hit. Tucked and rolled. Only sore point was my kneecap which hit the door. Damage to the bike - the pedal which also hit the door. Damage to the car - where the pedal hit the door.

Most embarrassing fall - at a stop-sign when I forgot to remove my foot from the toe-straps and fell over. No damage. It did surprise a passing pedestrian who I told that this was a normal stop - if you are still asleep (early in the morning on the way to work).

If the fall is on your back (have had that one night after a cat took out the front wheel), then an arm flung out and land on your back and arm.
