Hey Et. You're not alone.

I did this on the last Black Pearl I built last year. It worked fine with the fairly simple deck shapes (a flat rear deck and a simple round fore deck) and a hard-edged sheer line. I didn't dare attempt it on any of the Njords with their rounded gunwales. It could work with care.

One little trick I did was to save the female cutoffs of the forms for the deck I trimmed them the width of the strips and use then used them for cradles to support the deck while glassing the inside. Worked slick.

It's a very doable method. You just have to make sure the deck strips don't change shape on you. Also since you only have the very thin wood for rigidity, it's a bear to handle without damaging the deck.

I was very nice to be able to the same piece of glass cloth for both the outside of the deck and at the sheer joint. There's no feathering of the glass on the deck. This method might work well with those doing partial depth inlays. The inside glass would support the wood better while routing the recess or sanding the inlay flush... I'll try it next time.
