Hi Bryan,

There really arn't alot of really urban places on the lakes at least not many that cover large distances, but there are a few. Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the only real urban areas that cover more than a few miles. Lots of the coast though is privately held. Illinois is by far the most restrictive but luckily has a fairly short coast line and the ports are fairly regular in distance and all have launch ramps that will allow access. I've got I think all the nautical charts for the lakes, so can look up access points for you if you'd like.

I used to have a 30' sailboat berthed just north of the IL/WI line. Spent a fair amount of time on the lakes
