I used this method for my Guillemots and it worked well. I made one change: I cut the hatches after glassing/molding the lip. That way I didn't have to worry about leveling the hatch or having it shift during the glassing. I drilled four small reference holes from the pattern on the inside so that I could position the pattern on the outside and cut from the outside.
