Actually it is part of the coaming mold.

Not seen one yet that was structural though.

It is structural in the sense that with hull contact the deck can not easily collapse.

If you
: do remove it most keep the cheeks to allow a way to easily attach the
: backband, as well as to keep you centered in the boat.

If you do remove the seat, the cheeks should be tabbed into the hull for strength, or strengthen the hull in that area.
