If you seal up the shop and the filter bag is not the real good one, I would say yes to the air filter. The stuff you can barely see is bad for the lungs. The air filter is nice when hand sanding, but you could use a camera tripod with a flex hose close to the kayak and keep after the location, that's were the high cfm's helps.I built a mahogany kitchen in a shop with the fan and dust control running, 16' door open and still had to dust the room. The dust control looked the same unit with the trash can pre filter, a Delta air filter fan.
The trash can does work well, we also used a planner and is much faster to dump.
