Think about 2 doubles

Doug,
You want to get 4 people out on the water. Strongly consider building two identical doubles.

Doubles, by design, handle more weight, so getting one sized for a large paddler is a no-brainer.

There are fewer designs out there for doubles, so shopping will be a bit easier. Less ideas to eliminate.

Decide whether you want a long, narrow one, or a shorter, wider one. Wider is going to be a bit more stable. As long as the boat is narrower than 34 inches it will move better than a canoe. If it is as narrow as 22 inches it will require some extra practice to feel cofortable in it. You might want to look at boats 24 to 32-inches wide.

On a first-build there is a good deal of time spent on making forms. The second boat reuses these materials, saving money as well.

With the first double you can go solo, or take out another family member. When the second boat is done all four can hit the water. If your daughters are young, put one child with each parent. When the children are in preteen and teen-age years, they make good partners for each other, leaving the parents together for more relaxing times.

After you have 2 doubles, then look at building a single. By then you may want to build it as a skin-on-frame project. With three boats the kids pair up in one double, one adult paddles solo in a double, and the other parent takes the single. That idea works until the oldest child wants the single. Then it's time to build more singles, and set aside the doubles. Somewhere down the timeline you'll be refinishing those doubles as wedding presents--trust me on this.

Hope this helps your planning a bit.
