I love bulkhead footrests, and all three of my single kayaks have them. I've always classed both sides of the 4mm plywood with 6 oz. glass to be plenty strong, because I paddle agreesively and in the surf. I don't think the glass really adds that much weight. I even glass both sides of the back and day hatch bulkheads.
