: somewhere just after 2 minutes it shows a guy with a wide hand planer angling a strip...anyone know what plane it is?

Looks like one I have, which I used for model ship wood strip bevelling. Basically a metal frame with flat sole, and a razor blade slips into it. Simple and effective. Hadn't thought of it for kayak strip bevelling but may have to dig it out.

Try your local hobby store or mail-order wooden model ship supplier. Mine only cost around $10 AUD and came with a pack of blades.
