Plenty of stuff to browse through on line. It is not published as books, and it won't put a dent in that gift card, either.
Start with Tom Yost's stuff at www.yostwerks.com. Then take a look at Platt Monfort's ideas at www. gaboats.com.
For some more perspective, take a look at the plans being offered by Clark-craft, www.clarkcraft.com and review the web site of Klepper, www.klepper.com.

The basic s-o-f frame styles could be grouped as aboriginal and modern. The modern style uses frames cut from plywood, or built up from boards, or made by steambending a few thick pieces of wood. The aboriginal style, as I call it, uses a lot of thin ribs which are closely spaced.

Many modern kayaks are copies of boats in museums, and are built with modern tools and materials. While the original designer may have chewed on the wood to soften it for bending, today most builders use a steambox.

It is unlikely you'll cover your boat with walrus skins, but if you manage to get three of them, e-mail me for directions on how to sew them together. Otherwise, you'll use canvas (like Putz), nylon, or polyester. These fabrics need to bepainted with something to make them waterproof. Or, do like Klepper and Yost and make a skin from a fabric which is already waterproof.

You can mix and match frame design ideas from one author with skin ideas from some other source. Have fun with it.

Oh, and for another book idea, check out George Dyson's 'Baidarka'. Dyson doesn't have a website, but he does supply materials from his shop in Bellingham WA. Google his name and town for a phone number and street address.

While you are on google, search for 'putz walrus' and 'buildakayak.com' That should get you to my recalculation of the design numbers in Putz's book. Putz wants you to draw out some big building frames and gives measurements for how to draw them. I've got them translated into simple coordinate points you can graph.

Have fun with your project.
