Each state has it's own form of boat registration, that one is Florida, FL with a number that the state provides upon registration. That makes it 'legal' to motor around in (or on) the water. The term of the registration is variable, but in Iowa, it goes for 2 years (as I remember) then you have to go get another sticker and pay some more $. The number remains the same. In some states, a number near the stern tells the maximum occupancy as derived by displacement.
