Skin-on-Frame: Dying skins in advance??

I went reading about acid dyes this morning. I noticed they mentioned vat dying which I assume is aimed at big jobs and industry but it made me wonder. Is there a reason not to dye a skin before it is applied to the boat? I realize it is probably not practical and would take more dye, just curious if there is a dreaw back if you had the means to do that?
