Hi Evan,
There are advantages to both. Thules square bars don't allow the cradles to rotate on them which happens often on the Yakimas, though once a boat is on them they are secure with either. The round bars I think are a bit stronger.
My experience is with Yakima, just what I started with. Their attachment is quite easy, takes perhaps 10 minutes to install the rack. Thules is quick too.
My racks are only about 4' apart (a little less) and I can carry my 19' modified Yost Sea Ranger easily on it. Suspect the Highlander's are at least that far apart, shouldn't be a problem.
