I tried doing exactly what you were proposing and it didn't take me long to abandon the notion. 1/8" stock bends nicely. You don't need forms. Just take 2 ribs, lay them on top of each other and bend. The problem comes when you glue. It takes a zillion clamps and I could never get rid of gaps. And then you have to trim the edges because you will never get a perfect edge all the way 'round
Even two laminated pieces don't have much spring back and that becomes a problem, not an asset. You need to be able to bend and shape your piece as it goes into the mortise. Laminating a masik is a totally different affair. It's easy and strong.
I haven't done the Cunningham method of shaving the corners, I don't think it is necessary.
Anyway, enjoy. Boat building is a fine addiction. You'll figure it all out.
