The substitute would be not to finish the frame and ribs. I put something on my boat and still got rot when I reskinned it. Of cource the rot was purely visual as once it dried out the rot stopped. When I reskinned the boat a second time (and hopefully last) the I either did not care about the rot or there wasn't any. The rot was ONLY on the stems where its hardest to dry out. Oak and cedar is naturally rot resistant. If you live near salt water, then salt water is supposed to do a wonderfull job. In between skinnings I tried to artificially brine it and like I mentioned, the rot was either not there or I did not care about it.
I'd say skip it...
