Hi Murray,
It depends what you are going to do with it. If you are paddling sea or lakes and don't envisage hitting rocks hard, a solid bulkhead is fine. If you hit rocks hard enough the hull can deform and then a wooden bulkhead creates a possible break line. Therefore, some go for a foam bulkhead. However, if you are going surfing with the kayak then a foam bulkhead won't do if you nosedive into the sand. So, as I said, it depends.
