That's how I have done my shear seams. Epoxy the the deck to the hull, fillet any gaps, sand smooth, place tape around the hull, two inches below the shearline, then apply the deck cloth. While the epoxy is still green, trim off the excess cloth with a razor blade and be careful not to press too hard. The lip of the cloth can be filled with epoxy and sanded smooth. I place a strip of two inch tape along the inside seam also for added strength.
