I've never had a redwood SOF stringer split. Perhaps your talking about
narrow woodstrips ? I've had a few break / split while building 6 redwood
strippers.

There's lots of variety in redwood boards, from nearly blonde (Sea Bee) to
dark red heartwood, each with different splitting properties I suppose.

Most residential decks here are redwood ( decking, railing, slats), with
cedar posts. I guess that's why redwood's easy to find. Took a pic of the
decks this AM before my ride.

It's been unseasonably warm this week with temps here (9,000 ft) around 60
degrees. Needlesss to say, I've been riding every day before the cold and
snow return this weekend.

The moral of the story is....If you want redwood and January motorcycle
rides, move to Colorado
