I haven't done a lot of ocean paddling, but have seen a few smaller sharks swim by in the past, mainly around Sydney. Most of the attacks seem to be off Western Australia or South Australia. I prefer bays, rivers and lakes - plenty of those to paddle at my skill level without heading into the ocean. A friend has had a shark take a bite of his kayak in the Bay though.

There was a NSW kayaker who was paddling near the coast when he hit a "bump" - thought he'd found an uncharted reef. Went into shore to check his kevlar kayak, and found two shark teeth embedded in the lower hull!

If you ever get down this way ensure you make time to paddle in Tasmania.
