On the current Yost project, doing a build in a class and doing it in 18 hours, I've found that using deck screws for temporary clamps then removing them and slightly overdrilling the holes allows for 3/16" dowels to be glued in their place effectively plugging the holes as well as adding some non-metallic strength.
