: OR- how long does it last? I'm building a Sea Flea 11 for my daughter now.
: I've cut the frames out for a Sea Tour 17R and have grandiose vision of
: building a 20/double at some point in the future.
I've cut the forms for two of his Sea-Tours froma single 4x4 (half sheet) of plywood. I expect the forms for the Sea Fea will have even less surface area. A pint of epoxy would do the trick for coating this, but practically, you'll need to get a quart of resin and when you add the hardener you'll have even more. You'll have much more than you need.
I'm still using epoxy I bought over 11 years ago. It is a bit yellow, but still works. This was packaged in plastic bottles, which were then packed in plastic bags. The added bag over the bottle seems to be a good idea. Those bottles which I have not disturbed, and which are still in their plastic bags are not as amber as those which are unused, but which I pulled out of the plastic bags. So, if you have excess resin, I'd suggest you put the bottles in plastic bags. This is not a very scientific reason, but plastic bags are cheap and if they help, great. And if they do nothing, you are out a plastic bag
: On his page, he indicates that the cross sections, stems and coaming should
: be coated in epoxy w/ double coats on the plywood edges. I'll also need
: thickened epoxy for gluing the stringers in place. I haven't yet decided
: if I'm going with screws/pegs OR with fillets.
If you want to go with using a good varnish or polyurethane on the plywood, instead of epoxy, then you can get a couple blister pack tubes of fast setting epoxy cement at the local drugstore, or hardware store, and have enough for gluing the stringers.
: And, can you point me in the direction of what I should buy? I'm pretty local
: to Sweet Composites (www.sweetcomposites.com) and to CLC; so I could order
: from them and go pick up whatever.
Getting a quart of West Epoxy and the matching hardener might be as expensive as buying a gallon of a lesser-know brand. If you go by price you might have a lot to save for your next project. Or, build a few more boats.
Hope this helps
