How true. Some of these places are not even big enough to deserve the term "lumberyard". Judging from the number of ads in Mother Earth News for portable wood mills-- bandsaw and chainsaw models abound -- there are a lot of people getting into making their own lumber for one reason or another.
A week before I moved out of my old house (last year) I found a business card at the local hardware store advertising a guy who had one of these wood mills and who would turn your trees into lumber, or supply lumber he had already made. What shocked me was the address on the card. It was a neighbor whose property touched the back corner of my lot. So close and I never knew he was doing this!
