I have a small low angle block plane which I keep very sharp with a diamond steel.

I am right handed.

I find if I hold the plane, blade up and facing left in my left hand and hold the thinning point of the strip down against the blade with my left thumb then pull the strip through with my right hand I can apply just the right amount of pressure required for those very tips. Quick, jig-less and easy, with a little practice.

If you cut your thumb you are pressing too hard.
