Skin-on-Frame: Additives to the water for soaking rib stock

Hi Everyone,
I read somewhere on the WWW that adding fabric softener to the water when soaking rib stock helps make the rib more pliable after steaming.
Has anyone else heard of or use this ?
I'm soaking some ribs now... some in straight water & some in water+fabric softener to see if I notice any difference.
