There is no shame either way... It is nice to be able to say you made everything yourself... Again, a choice not a requirement...

The 6" width for the cheek plates is wide enough, the trick in putting it in the right spot.
Once you make the plates, the seat and the backrest or mockup of each, you can begin placing them in position.

If I recall when I did it at the end of last summer, I started with the seat position. Make sure it is forward enough that the back rest has ample room to pivot.

Once seat and back rest are set, the 6" cheek plates are easy to position. Narrower will seem even better at that point... They don't need to do much, just hold you snuggly centered in the seat.
