: cedar for a paddle, you might consider padding the dumbhead, that the
: thing that clamps down on your work. A piece of leather would work fine.

Mine, carving horse, is designed with a double sided upright and uses a 3/4" dowel for a drumhead, it's covered with a piece of 3/4" ID vinyl tube, grips well, is soft on the soft wood, is cheap and replaceable.
