This is what I did. I shaped a piece of Styrofoam as you see in the first picture. Before I glued it on I traced the shape on paper for a pattern. I glued the foam skeg on and tried it out in the water. Then I cut two inches off in the length (second picture) and tried the shorter version, then again I cut another two inches off the length and tried the shortest version. I liked the first longest version the best. Then I traced the full length paper pattern onto an oak board and made the final version. I just epoxied the oak skeg to the kayak and never glassed it and put a nice fillet on for strength.
