Kim,
Keep in mind that a little lateral area can have a noticeable affect on tracking. I bonded some ¼ x ¼ inch strips to a Play and shaped them to fair into the existing curve of the boat. The end result was about 18 to 24 inches long and a maximum depth of about ¾ inch tapering to nothing at either end. I probably could have gone with less. The Night Heron is such a nice looking boat that it would be a shame to alter the look too much.

: I know this has hundreds of threads already. I have read many.
: But now I need very specific advice. My kayak building buddy wants to put a
: permanent skeg on his Night Heron. Not with cables to be withdrawn into a
: sleeve. We are looking for advice on size, location, materials, etc.
: It can be fixed to the bottom or at the back. Whatever will work well.
: Much appreciated.
