: Turn the situation around and you'll understand why this happens. The fillets
: are fiberglass versions of wood "clamps", which are also called
: chines.

: When you connect two pieces of wood on hull or deck you use either a fillet
: of reinforced plastic (epoxy resin mixed with chopped glass fibers or some
: other filler) OR you use a piece of wood (the chine). The wood can be
: fastened to the chine with glue or mechanical fasteners such as nails or
: screws. Your fillet is really a fiberglass chine which is glued to the two
: pieces of wood which it connects. Wha is neat about using fillets is that
: they are cast in place--just thick plastic goo which you form with a
: fingertip or round-edged squeegee. The goo molds itself to fit every curve
: and twist perfectly. There is no planing and fitting, as you might do when
: using a wood chine in the joint.

: A light sanding won't hurt the epoxy. Once the glue is gone you are going to
: put on at least one coat of varnish, and that will restore the shine to
: any areas where your sanding has dulled the finish a bit.

: Hope this helps

Hi Paul,

Actually the sheerclamp would be closer to a gunwale rather than a stringer (yeah I know picky picky ). And it doesn't matter that the surface is glassed since it's an epoxy joint anyway. Does mean that the surface to be bonded needs to be preped for epoxy, can't be any epoxy blush and if the under deck surface has been laid up for awile that surface should be sanded prior to bonding to the sheerclamp.
