Frank,
Years ago a buddy and I build a plug for our fiberglass kayak mold using
wood strips and hot glue. It worked great! Now thirty years later wood
stripping is a big deal.
Check out this article by Rob Macks at his Laughing Loon site.
http://www.laughingloon.com/shoptips2.html He's touting the virtues of using HOT GLUE. He also has some good ideas about using a HEAT GUN in bending/forming wood strips.
I hope this helps.

I know I've read some posts here, there, and everywhere about strip building
: without staples. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any of them in archive
: searches-- more accurately I don't want to spend the time it takes to
: filter through unrelated posts to find the ones I want.
: So, starting yet another staple-less thread, how have people done it in the
: past? I'm thinking about just using some 3M painters tape, at this point,
: but I'm not sure how well that will hold. Any other suggestions?
