Hi Brian,
It looks like there is a couple of variables ($RequireEmail: & $RequireProfile:) that the admin can set to force a user to establish a user profile that must include a valid email address. The forum software will send a random password to that address so access to the forum will only occur once that password has been entered.
This certainly does provide a 'better than nothing' solution to user control and will restrict automated spam-bots etc. but all it takes to bypass the protection is for a human to retrieve the password & they can spam to their heart's content. Forum admin can ban that user but they can simply re-join under another name.
It's certainly worth doing as a first-attempt though.
